Riverglen Challenge Draws over 100 Competitors
The First Annual Riverglen Challenge was held here last Saturday, September 12th and clearly demonstrated the joy of crossing bridges and spanning generations. With 114 official contestants entered in the 5.65 mile run and walk, plus a two-mile walk, entrants far exceeded expectations. A lively and dedicated crew of volunteeers from the LIitleton Area Senior Center, Riverglen House, Peabody and Smith and members of the Littleton community (including three high school students) pulled together magnificently to put together a fun day for contestants, thier families and on-lookers. Created and managed by David Dodge of Riverglen House, the Riverglen Challenge is designed to foster support for fitness programs at the Senior Center.
Within the ranks of competitors were three families spanning three generations and one that included four! Our hats go off to these families. For official results, go to coolrunnings.com and type in riverglen. Trophies were presented to over 40 participants including medals for children under 12.
We can't wait for next year!

Veterans' Benefits May Be Available For You!
Riverglen House Senior Living Counselors have have recently completed an extensive training program in the Veteran's "Aid & Attendance" benefits program. Accompanying the in-house training, two free seminars were presented to the public here at Riverglen House in late June, featuring Stephanie Harris, Esq., of Turnaround Solutions for Senior Living, LLC., based in St. Louis, MO. Ms. Harris is a nationally recognized expert in the field of Senior Living and has made a specialty out of investigating programs that can offer financial assistance to veterans of the U.S. armed forces. The seminar was recorded and televised over Littleton's Channel 2 News & Information station.
The "Aid & Attendance" program specifically relates to the veteran, his or her spouse, or surviving spouse of a veteran, who served during specified war times and who was/were discharged in any way other than dishonorably. The basic requirements are that "...you must have a medical condition indicating that you are in need of assistance from others in order to lead a quality life such as, but not limited to, the following: Walking, Bathing, Dressing, Meal Preparation, Transportation, Protection from the Hazards of Life, Medication Reminders...etc." Basically, the person's combined monthly medical costs, which may include the costs of living in an Assisted Living or other Senior community, must exceed his or her monthly income, and there are ceilings on assets that must be considered as well. However, each case is considered individually, and it may be beneficial to have a professional financial advisor help evaluate the best financial strategies for lthe long term financial well-being of the affected person or persons.
If accepted for this program, the qualified U.S. Veteran may qualify for up to $1,644. per month; Surviving spouses can receive up to $1,056. per month, and qualified married couples may receive up to $1,949. per month in V.A. benefits. There are no fees or costs whatsoever associated with the application, and the Senior Living Counselors at Riverglen House can help you get started and see if you qualify.
Please call Ted Cooper at 603-444-8880 for more information. A DVD of Stephanie Harris' forty-five minute presentation is also available.

SIGNS OF SPRING!
The ice is almost out of our stretch of the Ammonoosuc, and with that came the first Red Wing Blackbirds, a pair of Canada Geese looking for a grassy patch, and the songbirds are showing up daily. We had a flock of Robins on the front lawn this morning and there's a male cardinal singing his heart out out back, up the hill! It's coming!
Don't forget to bring your birdfeeders IN especially at night, as the Black Bears are definitely out and very hungry! As our friend, Andy Timmins, from the NH Bear Project said to us: "A FED BEAR IS A DEAD BEAR!" Bears who live too close to people generally end up becoming a nuisance that can result in their demise. With the ground uncovering from a long winter, there are plenty of natural food sources now available for the birds, so don't feel that you are depriving your feathered friends!
