It's constant gurgling and occasional rushing is punctuated by the sounds of children laughing and splashing on a hot day,as they slide down a cascade of smooth rocks into one of the many deeper pools. A fly-fisherman practices his artful pastime trying to coax a cagey trout onto his fly. How did those fish get so darned smart anyway.

To mark the change of season, our Chef and the Dining Room staff have created an outstanding new summer menu, in addition to the daily specials prepared fresh everyday. Next weekend marks the opening of the famous Littleton Farmer's Market, held right here on Riverglen Lane every Sunday through mid-October. It is a sure harbinger of summer with all its bounties and lively entertainment. We will have pitchers of cold, Iced Tea available to passersby, along with our welcoming residents doing some first-class people watching from the front stoop!

We have recently welcomed six new residents with three more moving in imminently, so our staff is busy as is our resident Welcoming Committee, comprised of a group of outstanding volunteers who help new residents get their bearings. We are so fortunate to learn folks' life stories. They are so varied. The talents, interests, and hobbies our residents bring to the community create a patchwork quilt of wonderful complexity. And now that we are able, in some cases, to help secure financial aid to needy and deserving potential residents such as Veterans and/or their surviving spouses, our apartments are filling up at a faster rate than in several past years, the mood is lively, and we celebrate life and living everyday!

Riverglen Partners with N.H. Accompanying the in-house training, two free seminars were presented to the public here at Riverglen House in late June, featuring Stephanie Harris, Esq., of Turnaround Solutions for Senior Living, LLC., based in St. Louis, MO. Ms. Harris is a nationally recognized expert in the field of Senior Living and has made a specialty out of investigating programs that can offer financial assistance to veterans of the U.S. armed forces. The seminar was recorded and televised over Littleton's Channel 2 News & Information station.

The "Aid & Attendance" program specifically relates to the veteran, his or her spouse, or surviving spouse of a veteran, who served during specified war times and who was/were discharged in any way other than dishonorably. The basic requirements are that "...you must have a medical condition indicating that you are in need of assistance from others in order to lead a quality life such as, but not limited to, the following: Walking, Bathing, Dressing, Meal Preparation, Transportation, Protection from the Hazards of Life, Medication Reminders...etc." Basically, the person's combined monthly medical costs, which may include the costs of living in an Assisted Living or other Senior community, must exceed his or her monthly income, and there are ceilings on assets that must be considered as well. However, each case is considered individually, and it may be beneficial to have a professional financial advisor help evaluate the best financial strategies for lthe long term financial well-being of the affected person or persons.

If accepted for this program, the qualified U.S. Veteran may qualify for up to $1,644. per month; Surviving spouses can receive up to $1,056. per month, and qualified married couples may receive up to $1,949. per month in V.A. benefits. There are no fees or costs whatsoever associated with the application, and the Senior Living Counselors at Riverglen House can help you get started and see if you qualify.

Please call Ted Cooper at 603-444-8880 for more information. A DVD of Stephanie Harris' forty-five minute presentation is also available.

Riverglen House and A Place For Mom

Riverglen House and A Place For Mom have announced their collaboration in assisting seniors and their families identify appropriate options for independent and assisted living in Northern New England. We had a flock of Robins on the front lawn this morning and there's a male cardinal singing his heart out out back, up the hill! It's coming!

Don't forget to bring your birdfeeders IN especially at night, as the Black Bears are definitely out and very hungry! As our friend, Andy Timmins, from the NH Bear Project said to us: "A FED BEAR IS A DEAD BEAR!" Bears who live too close to people generally end up becoming a nuisance that can result in their demise. With the ground uncovering from a long winter, there are plenty of natural food sources now available for the birds, so don't feel that you are depriving your feathered friends!

FIRST ANNUAL RIVERGLEN CHALLENGE

Riverglen House of Littleton is sponsoring the first ever "Riverglen Challenge" on Saturday, September 12, 2009.
